The Future is Open! Notes from #WoodstockAI

2023-04-06

Last week, I attended what may go down as one of the most important gatherings in AI history. Over 100 leaders in open source AI - researchers, founders, VCs, and engineers - came together at a mansion in Woodside to discuss the future of open AI development.

The timing was perfect. Just days after the "Letter to Pause Giant AI Experiments" dropped, and amid growing concerns about AI safety and centralization, the open source community showed up to demonstrate a different path forward.

The Scene

Picture this: A beautiful spring day in Silicon Valley. A sprawling mansion with multiple buildings, courtyards, and gathering spaces. And everywhere you look, clusters of people engaged in intense discussion about the future of AI.

The energy was electric. You could feel that everyone there knew they were part of something historic. As Simon Willison put it, "This feels like the beginning of something really important."

Key Themes

Several important themes emerged from the discussions:

1. Open > Closed

The consensus was clear: open development of AI technology is not just possible, it's preferable. The benefits of open source:

  • Faster innovation through collaboration
  • Better safety through transparency
  • Wider distribution of benefits
  • More diverse perspectives
  • Greater accountability

2. Safety Through Transparency

A key insight: Making models open doesn't make them less safe - it makes them MORE safe. When code and weights are open:

  • More eyes can spot problems
  • Fixes can be developed collaboratively
  • Bad actors have fewer secrets to hide
  • Community standards can emerge

3. Distribution > Centralization

The future isn't one or two companies controlling AI - it's thousands of specialized models serving different needs:

  • Domain-specific models
  • Culture-specific models
  • Language-specific models
  • Task-specific models

The Projects

Some incredible open source projects were represented:

Language Models

Training & Fine-tuning

Applications

The Path Forward

Several concrete steps emerged for advancing open AI development:

  1. Better Infrastructure

    • More efficient training techniques
    • Improved deployment tools
    • Better collaboration platforms
  2. Community Standards

    • Model cards
    • Safety guidelines
    • Best practices
    • Ethical frameworks
  3. Education & Outreach

    • Developer education
    • Public awareness
    • Policy maker engagement
    • Cross-discipline collaboration

Why This Matters

The race to build powerful AI systems isn't just about who gets there first - it's about who builds it right. Open source development offers several crucial advantages:

  1. Democratization: Making AI accessible to everyone, not just tech giants

  2. Innovation: Thousands of minds working together move faster than a few working in secret

  3. Safety: Transparent development allows for better oversight and faster fixing of problems

  4. Specialization: Different communities can build models that serve their specific needs

What's Next

The energy from WoodstockAI is already turning into action:

  1. New collaborations between projects
  2. Shared infrastructure initiatives
  3. Community standards working groups
  4. Educational resources development

Getting Involved

Want to be part of this movement? Here's how:

  1. Contribute to Projects

    • Pick a project from above
    • Join their Discord/community
    • Start with good first issues
  2. Share Knowledge

    • Blog about your experiences
    • Give talks at meetups
    • Help others learn
  3. Build Something

    • Start a new project
    • Combine existing tools
    • Share your results

Conclusion

WoodstockAI wasn't just a gathering - it was a statement about the future of AI development. The path forward isn't through secrecy and centralization, but through openness, collaboration, and shared progress.

The next few years will be crucial in determining how AI technology develops. The open source community has shown it's ready to lead the way toward a future where AI benefits everyone, not just a select few.

Special thanks to the organizers, hosts, and all attendees who made this historic event possible. The future is open!
